How this works
You can rent your personal home to your own business for up to 14 days a year. The business deducts the rent, and you receive that money tax-free personally (IRC ยง280A(g)) โ as long as it's a real business use at a fair, documented rate.
To keep it legitimate, you need ALL of these:
- A real business purpose โ photo/video shoots for marketing, or actual meetings/events (board or strategy meetings, team retreats, hosting clients).
- A fair rate โ what a comparable venue (studio, Airbnb, hotel meeting room, or event space) would charge for the day. Document it.
- Your home is rented 14 days or fewer in the year (including any non-business rentals).
- The business actually pays the rent to you, and you keep records: an agenda/itinerary for each shoot or meeting, an invoice, and your comparable-rate quotes.
